Updated Tornado and Severe Weather Planning Guide and New Safety Alerts
According to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), tornadoes cause an average of 70 fatalities and 1,500 injuries in the U.S. each year. These violent storms can leave behind a wake of damage and destruction that can take months or years to clean and rebuild.
Tornado seasons vary in different parts of the country, but a tornado – like any severe weather – can happen anywhere at any time. Yes, tornadoes are uncommon in the Northeast, but they can still occur with little or no warning. On June 1, 2011, a powerful “EF3” tornado struck Springfield, MA resulting in four deaths and more than 10,000 commercial and personal property claims costing insurers in excess of $200M.
Because your clients and Beacon Mutual policyholders may be impacted by some type of severe weather in the coming months, the Beacon Mutual Insurance Company is providing our Tornado and Severe Weather Planning Guide to help businesses prepare for a severe weather storm.
Safe clean-up after a storm is equally important. As businesses make repairs and reopen, employees may be conducting work which they are unaccustomed to and for which they may not be trained. Work conditions change drastically after severe weather and other natural disasters. Even experienced employees are at risk in storm recovery operations. Taking time to prepare for a tornado or severe weather event includes taking the time to train and re-train employees involved in storm clean-up operations.
